How does Functional Medicine work at your clinic?
Our Functional Medicine program identifies and treats the root causes of chronic conditions through nutrition, lifestyle counseling, detoxification, and stress management. This approach is highly individualized, helping patients regain energy, lose weight, and improve long-term health without relying on drugs or surgery. Dr. Ungar has been a functional medicine doctor for 25 years. He also gives seminars to doctor’s on functional medicine.
What is functional medicine for autoimmune disease?
Functional medicine looks at the root causes of autoimmune disease rather than just managing symptoms. Instead of focusing only on medications, it explores factors like gut health, diet, stress, toxins, hormones, and foods that may trigger or worsen conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and Sjögren’s syndrome.
Can functional medicine help with Hashimoto’s thyroid disease?
Yes. Hashimoto’s is one of the most common autoimmune conditions we see. Functional medicine supports thyroid health by looking at nutrient levels, gut health, food sensitivities, and inflammation. The goal is to reduce immune system “flare-ups” that attack the thyroid and help restore balance.
How does functional medicine approach rheumatoid arthritis and lupus?
For conditions like RA and lupus, functional medicine focuses on calming the immune system and reducing inflammation. This may involve anti-inflammatory nutrition plans, targeted supplements, and lifestyle strategies to reduce stress and joint pain, while supporting energy and overall immune function.
Can functional medicine support people with MS or Sjögren’s syndrome?
Yes. While these conditions often require ongoing medical care, functional medicine can work alongside conventional treatment to support the nervous system, improve fatigue, reduce inflammation, and strengthen resilience. Many patients find lifestyle changes and natural therapies help improve quality of life.
Is functional medicine a replacement for conventional treatment?
No. Functional medicine is not meant to replace necessary medical care. Instead, it complements your doctor’s treatment plan by focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, and underlying imbalances that conventional medicine often doesn’t address. This integrative approach gives patients more tools to manage their autoimmune condition.
What is Sanexas Therapy and how is it different from TENS?
Sanexas Therapy is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that stimulates nerve repair, improves circulation, and relieves chronic pain. Unlike simple TENS units, that block pain signals from getting to the brain. Sanexas works at the cellular level to restore nerve function. Our clinic is one of the few in the Akron, OH area offering this advanced therapy. 99% of clinics treating neuropathy do not have this equipment.
Can Sanexas therapy help with diabetic neuropathy?
Yes. Sanexas is FDA-cleared technology that uses electrical cell signaling to improve blood flow and nerve regeneration. For patients with diabetic neuropathy, it can help reduce burning, tingling, numbness, and pain in the feet and legs. Many patients in Akron, Ohio have reported improved circulation and nerve function after treatment.
Does Sanexas work for chemo-induced neuropathy?
Yes. Chemotherapy can damage nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness. Sanexas therapy delivers gentle electrical signals that stimulate the nerves and surrounding tissues, promoting healing at the cellular level. Clinical studies show it can reduce pain and improve nerve communication for patients with chemo-induced neuropathy.
Can Sanexas therapy help with back and neck pain?
Absolutely. By improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and stimulating nerve repair, Sanexas therapy can help with chronic back pain, neck pain, and spinal- related discomfort. Unlike medications that only mask pain, Sanexas works on the underlying nerve and tissue health.
Is Sanexas therapy effective for drop foot?
Drop foot occurs when nerve damage weakens the muscles that lift the foot. Sanexas therapy helps by stimulating the nerves and muscles, encouraging regeneration and improved function. While results vary, some patients experience better mobility and less weakness with consistent treatment.
How is Sanexas different from other treatments?
Sanexas therapy is based on neoGEN® technology, which uses advanced electric cell signaling—not TENS or simple nerve stimulation. It works at the cellular level to help regenerate nerves, improve blood flow, and restore communication between damaged nerves and the brain. This makes it an advanced option for conditions like neuropathy, chronic pain, and drop foot, where standard treatments often fall short.
Is Shockwave Therapy painful?
Not at all! Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses acoustic sound waves to stimulate tissue repair and reduce inflammation. It’s effective for chronic pain, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and more with little to no downtime.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. It helps break down scar tissue, increase blood flow, and speed up recovery in muscles, tendons, and joints.
What conditions can shockwave therapy help with?
Patients in Akron often use shockwave therapy for:
- Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries
- Chronic tendonitis and bursitis

How does shockwave therapy work?
The treatment device delivers pulses of sound waves to the injured area. These waves trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulate new blood vessel growth, and help reduce chronic pain by breaking down calcium deposits and scar tissue.
Is shockwave therapy safe, and what does it feel like?
Yes, shockwave therapy is safe and FDA-cleared. During treatment, patients may feel mild tapping or discomfort in the treated area, but it is well-tolerated and usually only lasts a few minutes. Most patients can return to normal activity right away.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of treatments depends on your condition and how long you’ve had the problem. Many patients feel relief after 3–5 sessions, while chronic issues may take longer. Our Akron office will create a plan tailored to your specific needs.

What is MR4 and Erchonia laser therapy?
MR4 and Erchonia are types of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) that use light energy to stimulate healing in the body. Unlike surgical lasers that cut tissue, these therapeutic lasers use safe, non-heat-producing light to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and speed recovery. Patients in Akron, Ohio often use them for pain relief, wound healing, and nerve support.
Can MR4 or Erchonia laser therapy help with nerve pain?
Yes. Studies show that low-level lasers can stimulate nerve regeneration and reduce neuropathic pain. Patients with chronic nerve pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, or sciatica often report less discomfort and better mobility after consistent treatments.
Can laser therapy help with arthritis and sports injuries?
Yes. Both MR4 and Erchonia lasers are commonly used for arthritis, joint pain, tendonitis, sprains, and sports-related injuries. The light energy penetrates deep into tissues, reducing inflammation and encouraging natural repair at the cellular level. Many athletes use it to recover faster and get back to activity sooner.
Does laser therapy support post-surgical recovery and wound healing?
Absolutely. Laser therapy can improve circulation, reduce swelling, and promote tissue repair after surgery. It is also effective for wounds, ulcers, and soft tissue injuries, helping speed the healing process while reducing discomfort.
Is laser therapy safe, and what does it feel like?
Laser therapy is safe, painless, and FDA-cleared. During a session, you may feel gentle warmth or nothing at all. Most patients describe it as relaxing, and many notice pain relief shortly after treatment. There are no known long-term side effects.

Who is a candidate for Spinal Decompression Therapy?
Spinal Decompression is ideal for patients with herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, chronic back/neck painand failed low back surgeries. In many cases, patients experience relief in 6–8 weeks without surgery. This therapy is popular among Akron patients who want to avoid invasive options.
What is spinal decompression therapy?
Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical treatment that gently stretches the spine using a specialized table. This creates space between the vertebrae, reduces pressure on the discs, and promotes healing for conditions such as herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease.
How can spinal decompression help a herniated disc or sciatica?
When a disc bulges or herniates, it can press on nearby nerves, causing pain that radiates into the legs or arms (sciatica). Spinal decompression gently relieves that pressure, allowing nutrients and oxygen to flow back into the disc so it can heal more effectively. Many patients in Akron, Ohio report reduced pain and improved mobility after treatment.
Does spinal decompression work for spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease?
Yes. For patients with spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, decompression can reduce nerve irritation, improve flexibility, and lessen chronic pain. While it doesn’t “cure” these conditions, it can significantly improve comfort and quality of life without surgery.
